Information about Westwood Early Childhood Center:
Westwood Early Childhood Center was founded in 1984 and is a full-day, year-round program that serves children ages 6 weeks to 6 years old and their families. The ECC is an integral part of Westwood Lutheran Church and helps foster the development of young children within a quality Christian atmosphere. Elements such as natural materials, open-ended activities, and the arts are woven throughout their practice and are visible within our environment. Four essential partners-- the church community, children, teachers, and parents-- guide their work, shape their ministry, and serve as inspiration within daily practice. The ministry of the WECC extends beyond the walls of the church into the homes and lives of the many families that attend the WECC. At the WECC children are afforded the freedom to make a plan and engage in interactions with other children, materials, or adults. They recognize children for who they are today and know that by focusing on the present, they are helping to shape active and engaged citizens of tomorrow. Italian educator Loris Malaguzzi’s vision of an ‘education based on relationships’ has strongly informed their work. Their goal is to continually foster relationships between children, families, educators, and the community and to encourage others to see the potential that exists when these groups come together with a shared vision and collective spirit.
